The Ayla Woven Skirt sewing pattern is a modern cocoon-shaped midi skirt designed for comfort and distinctive style. Featuring an elastic waist, darted hem and topstitched feature seam, Ayla creates a sculptural silhouette with optional inseam pockets for added practicality.
Designed for woven fabrics with some structure, including wool, poplin, drill, linen and ripstop, Ayla is easy to sew and easy to wear. The unique cocoon shape and considered seam details make Ayla a contemporary alternative to a classic straight skirt.

5 stars for the finished product, 3 stars for the construction instructions re: the pockets. I finally gave up and just made regular in-seam pockets, using a pattern piece from another SA pattern. It wasn’t until the garment was complete that I figured out what I *should* have done. Came together quickly otherwise. I will try it the pockets as designed the next time! (And there will be a next time because I love it!)
I made this with a heavier weight cotton (sold by Ikea as curtain fabric) which gives a great structure and shows off the lantern shape.
I sized down 1 size from my measurements and it’s still plenty comfortable.

I love this skirt which I made in a beautiful linen but my god what an arse ache to make. I hate the construction of the pockets and waistband (which I had to unpick a few times) I think I’ll just do them how I would usually do them. The pockets are far too small, no point in having them if you can’t put anything in them so when I make again I’ll just use the pocket pattern I always make.

Very current shape, easy pattern to sew, fit is good etc. my one gripe is that the pockets are very small, not even big enough for my phone…pockets are pretty much the reason I sew my own clothes, I need them to be big and functional! In all other ways, this is an excellent pattern, thanks StyleArc

Love the structure of this skirt. The A-line shape that tapers at the hem is giving architectural style to this easy-to-construct pattern.

Swift and easy make! This skirt has a unique shape due the sculptural darts at the hemline piece that attaches to the A-line skirt piece. I ordered pdf, traced, cut out, and constructed the whole project in less than six hours. Instructions and illustrations were great.

I made a wearable muslin from a knit fabric that stretched and grew in length. I shortened by a huge amount, and ended up with a nice skirt. I could tell that it’s a keeper. I’ll be making it again from knits (ones that don’t stretch so much) and from wovens (shortened as needed for my 5’1″ size).

I love the unusual shape of this skirt. It is quick and easy to put together. I have made two now – the first in a cotton fabric and the second in a thai silk. They both look great, although the silk one has a bit more structure and so makes the most of the shape.

This is a really cool skirt pattern. I chose it because lots of my skirts are way too girly, so I like the silhouette of this one with the tapered bottom third. It’s very useful if you find yourself wearing it on a windy day too, it doesn’t fly around so much as normal skirts. It’s really easy to sew. I love that it has pockets. I sewed it using a heavy herringbone linen and it looks great. Love an elastic waist too.
